In Teliu was inaugurated, at the end of January, ?The Snails Factory?, an investment of European scope. The establishment includes the processing unit, with production, storage and reception areas, refectory. The facility also comprises a 2000 t frigorific room, a water tank where the snails are washed and the distribution area. The staff wears special equipment and is fully instructed.
The Shells Process
After the washing process, the shells are removed and enter into the sterilizing plant. The unbroken shells will end in the clients? plates in the restaurants. The others enter into a mill outfit to produce the calcium carbonate, used as complementary food for the snails.
A few adventurers had the courage to start a business within the alternative agriculture field. The snail ?breeders? consider themselves real farmers and intent to turn Teliu commune into ?The Snail Capital? of Romania.
Escar Prod has been established in 2005; the company is specialized in processing and promoting the snail meat produced in the member farms. ?We have 213 farmer, spread in 29 counties. The selling capacity is 1000 t a year; we deliver our products on the European and North-American markets. We are about to get to bio certificate for all our products. The investment in Teliu offered 100 jobs for the local people?, the president of the managing board of Escar Prod SCA, Marcel Macris stated.
Romanian snails menu
- 100 snails
- 40-50 garlic
- 30 g salt
- hot pepper
Wash the snails and boil them for 10 minutes. Percolate and extract the snails from the shells with a fork. Boil them for 20-30 minutes in sauerkraut and then put them into a bowl with pepper and garlic sauce. Put the bowl in oven for few minutes. Garnish with french-fry and accompany the plate by a quality white wine.
