In Harman commune, Brasov County, close to the Natural Reserve "Dealul Lempes", people can enjoy many outdoor leisure activities: from paragliding to extreme sports such as launching into the air on a bike from jump ramps especially arranged for small and big bicycles. Recently, the first edition of the Extreme Fest competition was organized in this town occupying an area which was provided by the Town Hall of Harman. The Fest was a real success and attracted the best sportsmen in the field, including professional sports performers who participated in international competitions.
An extreme sport
"This is an extreme sport and children begin practising it at the age of 10. At the beginning, the children start to train in parks making small jumps. In time they manage to do higher and higher jumps and through perseverance, talent and dedication they reach performance. Children between 12 and 26 participated in the contest organized in Harman. My son, Christoph Baier, aged 17, who began to train at an early age and came first at MTB, which is the big bikes category was also among them. The children competed both on MTB bikes and small BMX bike. The winner for BMX category was Demian Barnabas. The competition attracted a lot of participants, each one of them wishing to make performance and do the most spectacular jumps," said Mr. Baier Ditmar, organizer of this competition.
Dangerous jumps
The bike jump ramps are specially built following certain standards and measures. They are 4-5 meters high and the bikers manage to jump 5-10 meters high, making leaps in the air which can even reach 30 meters.
This extreme sport is done following a careful selection of the children, some of them self-selecting, as in gymnastics, by potential. This sport requires a lot of inner organization, thinking and good physical condition.
Pioneer work in Harman
"I plan to provide them with a piece of land especially created for the young children through the Town Hall of Harman. I am thinking to choose a good location with adequate soil for such kind of competitions as it happens abroad. For example in Austria at an international competition of this kind there are around 40-50,000 visitors. It is a sport which attracts tourists and offers an unforgettable recreational activity. Here in Harman the visitors can choose between multiple leisure activities from culture and history to extreme sports," said Mr. Mihai Disor, Mayor of Harman.
