To the East - the County of Covasna, to the South-East - the County of Buzau, to the South - the Counties of Prahova, Dambovita and Arges, to the West - the County of Sibiu and to the North - the Counties of Mures and Harghita.
Testimonies of the Past
Records of the early man’s existence in the County of Brasov date back to 60,000 - 40,000 BC. The human settlings have continued to exist long afterwards uninterruptedly during the Stone Age, the Neolithic Age, the Bronze Age and finally the Iron Age. The discovery of numerous items (crock, weapons made up of different materials, coins, adornment items, farming and craftsman tools, etc.) indicate a significant development of the local civilization.
"Being an ancient cultural and economic center, a point of intersection of the main Middle Age trade routes and a place of peaceful cohabitation for the Saxons, Hungarians and Romanians, Brasov is now an attraction for both Romanian and foreign people," said Mr. Aristotel Cancescu, President of the County Council of Brasov.
Restoring the Historical City of Brasov
Mr. Artistotel Cancescu spent his childhood in the old part of the city and this historical part of Brasov has remained in his heart, along with its medieval greatness and atmosphere. "I have seen the careless attitude of the Communist authorities towards the treasures of this region and now, as President of the County Council Brasov, I have set my mind to restore the historical city as it should have been. At least two of the towers of the Fortress under the Tampa Hill have collapsed because of the ignorance of the leaders in those times. After nearly 50 years, I have rebuilt them and they are now major tourist sites not to be missed by the people visiting the city. The Historical Center of Brasov is now worth its name."
Symbols of Grandeur
The Graft Bastion, the White Tower and the Black Tower, the Skinners` Bastion, the Drapers` Bastion, the Gunpowder towers, the Weavers` Bastion, "Olimpia" center, the Sports High School building and the Catherine’s Gate, together with the walls bordering Tiberiu Brediceanu alley and Graft area, are amongst the city’s most important monuments reminding of the ancient times. They have all been consolidated, restored and rehabilitated, so that local people and tourists could admire them. All these are symbols of Middle Age Brasov grandeur and they have revived from ruins after ten years of restoration works due to the care of the county administration authority.
"We are proud of Brasov Fortress. The hundreds of years of history in these places honor us and we are glad that, by our contribution, testimonies of the past will be passed over to future generations, concluded Mr. Aristotel Cancescu."
