Drapers' Bastion from the Old Citadel of Brasov was rehabilitated and given back to the touristic circuit. The money resulted from the County Council Brasov, from the European Union, and from the United Nations. A rehabilitation project of the entire Citadel which started many years ago is thus ended. The inauguration of this historical vestige attracted tourists like a magnet, on the alley at the feet of Tampa. It is known that the Bastion was built by the goldsmiths' craft between years 1450-1455, and in 1640 it was taken over by drapers' craft. This is where its name comes from.
Inauguration with a brass band
The inauguration of the last bastion was done with guests, tourists and brass band concert performed by the pupils of Andrei Saguna National College.
"To me, the inauguration of this Bastion means a dream come true, because the rehabilitation of the entire citadel was started ten years ago. But we now manage to inaugurate Drapers' Bastion as well, ending the range of investments of the Citadel. The increase in the number of tourists can already be noticed and, according to statistics, we currently have 800,000 tourists per year. They come to visit the monuments, the historic centre of Brasov and some other interesting objectives.” declared the President of the County Council Brasov, Aristotel Cancescu on this occasion.
Short history
Drapers' Bastion was built on four elliptic wooden galleries levels with the diameter of 16 m. At the beginning the bastion was 20 m high. Its walls were 2 m thick and it used to have holes at the first level for law calibre cannons installation.
Passionate by the old Citadel, Aristotel Cancescu mentioned: "I've heard that there has been capital reparation in 1910, but the Citadel was not damaged that much back then , another one in 1952 and the last one in 1975, when an architect consolidated a bastion and two towers. No intervention has been done ever since up till ten years ago when we managed to get funds and rehabilitate the entire Citadel, giving it back to the touristic circuit."
Brasov, old cultural centre
Brasov is considered to be an old culture and economic life centre. The advantage: the fact that it is located at the crossroads of the main commercial road in the Middle Ages where the Saxons, Hungarians and Romanians used to live in peace. Today, Brasov represents an attraction for both Romanian and foreign tourists. So we would like to invite you pay a visit to Brasov, with several architectural, museum and natural objectives and charming surroundings. The Old Citadel represents the strong point for attracting tourists and waits the visitors to experiment the potential of the area.
