The Knights Tournament

During May 1-3, Brasov hosted the medieval festival Knights tournament, organized by the Order of the Tara Barsei Fortresses' Knights and Aro Palace Group. Nor where they the only knights at the feast: the festival attracted fighters from all the country: The Order of the Knights of Hunedoara, The Crown Guardsmen, the Knights of Kronstadt, Basarabi Order, Musatini Order, Gladius Dei, the Wolf Knights.
Andrei Prian is the head of the Tara Barsei Fortresses' Knights; in the medieval hierarchy, he holds the title of medieval weapons master Andrei of Transylvania. Under his command, this year 110 knights and princesses occupied Cetatuia Hill, the knights hanged horses thieves, traitors and witches and fought to conquer or defend the fortress, which also hosted minstrels performances, knights jousts, medieval dances, fire shows and theatre plays.

Traditional Partner

SC Aro Palace SA is the traditional partner of this event. As director Gabriel Florescu, remarked, this year the company remained the only sponsor of the festival. A detail to ignore when it comes of traditions and history in Brasov. ?Our society reaches this year 70 years. It is the modern heir of the medieval inns of Brasov. The historical centre, the museums and all that means the old fortress involves customs, beliefs and traditional cuisine, elements we bring in actuality. Through the medieval festival, tourists can discover the everyday life in the medieval Brasov?.

Back to the Colonisation

The Knights of the strongholds on Tara Barsei aimed to reconstruct the period of the colonization of these lands, the 12th century, when Saxon and Teuton Knights have burst in these areas. The actual association of the Knights of Tara Barsei fortresses have been established in 2003. They already showed their skills at festivals in Sighisoara, Sibiu, Suceava, Targu Mures, Arad, Constanta, Oradea, Cluj. Their plan was to turn the festival into an international one, involving knights of the great European castles. So far, it has been impossible to achieve this goal. From their own money and helped by friends, they have been able to procure their armours, their medieval clothes and their weapons.

Fighting workshops

Throughout the festival, the citadel hosted workshops exhibiting medieval weapons, ironwork, medieval dances, conferences on historical topics and moments of drama. The medieval atmosphere was maintained throughout the festival by knights and princesses, but also by picturesque characters such as friar Benedictus, Xander the Scottish, the headsman, the hostess, comedians and buffoons.
