The patrimony of Prejmer Commune, well-known for the medieval fortress of Tara Barsei, includes an orthodox church, built on the ruins of an old sixth century church. The latter resemblances to the Christian churches existing today in Egypt, dating back to the 4th ? 6th centuries. This Christian jewel hosts exterior and interior paintings and icons with historical value.
St. Peter and Paul
?The church is located in the north-east of Prejmer, where the Romanian population lived in the medieval period. With the arrival of Saxons, an Evangelical church was build in the place of the 6th century Romanian church. Romanians were displaced to the edge of the village by both Saxon and Teutonic Knights after 1270. The Evangelical church was first Catholic and had St. Peter and Paul as patrons. This is why the Orthodox Church of Prejmer has been consecrated to those holy forefathers, after being built in 1769? parish priest Sorin Serban stated.
Priceless Paintings
If the exterior paintings were affected by the passage of time, very valuable paintings inside, made by the famous church painter Iosif Vasu, are still well-conserved. The painter is renowned for having achieved true masterpieces and left many murals of churches in Tara Barsei. The church became uncomprehending for the parishioners, so that a cathedral is being built at Prejmer.
Baroque and Renaissance
St. Apostles Peter and Paul church was first built on the ruins of a wooden church, than replaced by a stone one, on the expenses of some merchants of Brasov. The nowadays church has the classic cross while the iconostases and the icons conserve Baroque and Renaissance style?s influences.
