Past and Future at Halchiu

Halchiu commune, 15 km from Brasov, is located in the north of Tara Barsei. The German inhabitants were once specialised in haulage. They travelled therefore a lot and became skilled and experienced in trading. An old local saying depicts a Halchiu inhabitant as "more crafty than a Jew".
Golden Blazonry
The new blazonry of Halchiu describes the local history, customs and professions. With a shield as background, two golden crosses border a king wearing a purple and gold mantle and a crown; the monarch holds in the right hand a sceptre and in the left hand a globe with cross.
The History in an Album
The blazonry isn't the only attempt of Halchiu to recover its history. The commune is for the first time the subject of an historical album, realized by four valuable specialists. According to the mayor Ioan Garbacea, "the album is a cultural act that includes the first local chronology published in Romanian, after 630 years since its first documentary attestation. The recovering of Halchiu history is both the attempt to reconstitute its medieval life and the conviction that the present is already a history page". The realisation of the album is a symbolic invitation the nowadays Halchiu made to the entire European Community.
