The Village near the Willows

The location of Ghimbav, on the national road DN1, near Brasov, at the crossroad of some important communication lines, favours its harmonious economic development.
A Dacian Settlement
The actual area of Ghimbav was once a Dacian settlement, on the bank of Ghimbasel creek, specific for the civilisation of the iron's first age. The considerable quantity of dacian pottery discovered in the area proves that our ancestors lived once here. The village used to be known as the village near the willows, which explains its German name Widenbach.
The German influences are evident in the actual image of Ghimbav, a town with large parallel streets along a water course.
The Germans' Road
Across Ghimbav, through the shallow over Ghimbasel creek, there was once a road connecting Brasov to Sibiu, passing by the Black Fortress of Codlea Hummock. The road used to be known as "The German road", proving the intense commercial activity unfolded by those tradesmen.
The German chronicles offer information about the beginnings of Ghimbav. According to those documents, the construction of the churches built on rocks conceived by the Teuton Knights was finished before the Tatars' invasion in 1241.
The Romanian inhabitants of Ghimbav were first attested in 1700.
Past and Present
The mayor Dorel Toma has convincing arguments in inviting the foreign tourists to visit Ghimbav: "Our offer enlace the past and the future. The history's keens can visit the evangelic church and the orthodox church "The Trinity", various historical and architectural monuments. For the investors we offer facilities and opportunities, such as the celerity in obtaining the due documents, the extension of the built-up area. The taxes and local charges can be reduced dependent upon the investment's amount. Another opportunity is the grant of fields for the industrial and housing constructions".
