A Place of Refuge

Holbav commune is located in Tara Barsei Hollow, on the southern side of Magura Codlei hill, at 900 m high. It is a settlement specific of the mountain villages, with most of the houses scattered on the surrounding hills; the location is in fact a marvelous natural touring amphitheatre.

The Peasant?s Photograph
Gheorghe Oprea, the mayor of Holbav, a real artist (painter, sculptor and writer) loves to talk about the commune he administrates: ?The Romanian name of the locality seems to be Serpeni-Holbav, according to a photograph of a Romanian peasant conserved in the historical archive of Brasov. According to a document preserved in the local church, the locality had been part until 1464 of Dukedom of Fagaras, under the reign of Walachia?s princes?. The commune Holbav was reestablished in 2004, following the reorganization of commune Vulcan, which incorporated it before that date.

Rural Development
Holbav is a natural and unpolluted area, spreading on dozens of hectares on the wooded hills. Breeding is the main activity of the inhabitants. Although the schools, the orthodox church and the communitarian centre have been renewed, the households spread on the hills have not been connected at the power plant: ?The school and a little area called ?At the Mill? are the only establishments connected at the power plant. Not being electrified was quite the thing that attracted so many businessmen came in this genuine settlement to take refuge from the stressing and polluted city life. Among the show places distinguish the ruins of the dacian stronghold located on Magura Codlei and the geo-paleontologycal reserve? the mayor stated.

Icons and Books? Collection
What makes special Holbav commune is the width on the environment untouched by the civilization; the flora and fauna, the water and the soil are as pure as they used to be once. The inhabitants continue to celebrate their costumes. The parishioners donated the icons and the artifacts of patrimonial value to the museum within the local orthodox church dedicated to The Assumption. The museum also hosts the unique collection of illuminated manuscripts dating back to the time when the famous Romanian scholar Andrei Saguna used to guide the spiritual life of Transylvania.
The commune celebrated last years 550 years from its first mention in the medieval documents and 100 years since it has declared ?big commune?.
There are many opportunities the investors are invited to profit of: infields, fiscal facilities, qualified labor and natural reserves, not to mention the strongholds ruins and the historical monuments.
