The commune Halchiu is located at the north of Tara Barsei, 15 km distant from Brasov. Its territory compasses two villages: Halchiu ? the commune seat and Satu-Nou.
The lands located within the territorial and administrative area of the commune favored the development of the agriculture, meadows and pasturages.
The Fortress on the Swamp
Legend tells that a swamp used to be once on the area covered today by Tara Barsei. Count Hiltwin, along with the colonist which accompanied him, drained off the swamp and transformed it into fertile land. In remembrance of the count, the locality?s armory represents a hero carrying a mace with a shot.
The first document attesting the locality, also known as Holtovery (in Magyar) and Hesldorf (in German) goes back to 1337 and refers to Villa Heltiven, Heltven, Heldvinum.
As the local tradition testimonies, the inhabitants were Magyars colonized to defend the stronghold Heldemburg (Crizbav); the large distance to the borough forced the inhabitants to leave the settlement. After their leaving, the locality was occupied by Germans. According to the documents, the inhabitants participated at the revolutionary events in 1848, the World War I (1916-1918) and World War II (1940-1944).
The first census, made in 1510, had attested 100 inhabitants, among which four widows, 1 janitor, one bell-ringer, a teacher and 5 shepherds.
The Romanian population registered in Halchiu was first attested in 1536; the inhabitants used to be then, as they are today, working householders eager to learn and make progresses.
Among the projects established by the mayor of Halchiu are the management?s improvement of the local funds through IT solutions and ?The Social Centre Saint Nicholas? Halchiu, built for housing elders and children.
For the program ?Water-supply network Satu-Nou?, the feasibility study has already been established; the project?s implementation will require SAPARD funds.
Streets? asphalting and sidewalks? setting up are other major preoccupations of the city hall. The purpose of the local promoting strategy is to attract investments and turn to profit the local potential, in order to increase the inhabitants? standard of living. There are several strategies to follow in order to accomplish this goal: supporting the agriculture, the creation and development of small and medium enterprises, the local tourism, the education and culture, the housing construction and improving the infrastructure?s conditions.
The local council and the city hall are constantly preoccupied for the revival of the traditional German and Romanian customs. The community centres of Satu-Nou and Halchiu house frequently splendid folkloric shows, performed by the folkloric band ?The Chestnut Flower?. The philanthropic-cultural foundation ?St. Nicholas? and the schools within the commune are the main initiators of the cultural activities.
The tourists can visit the magnificent churches within the commune?s area, which are imposing historical monuments. The reach broad-leaved woods and the specific fauna also are an irresistible attraction.
