Traditional leather manufacture
|
|
Ioan and Virginia Ghiță are two craftsmen who make traditional leather manufacture. The models are personal creations, impressed with Romanian traditional patterns. All the tools they use come from the shoemaker?s shop of Virginia Ghiță?s father, who did not repair the shoes, but created, for more than 50 years, leather shoes and boots. Today, the family caries on this tradition, but turned to traditional manufacture by creating bags, wallets, belts and bracelets.
Personal models
?We work traditional leather manufacture, we use old traditional tools, kept in our family, we purchase high quality leather, we design the model and we make leather combinations with Romanian traditional models, taken from the wool carpets from Oltenia region, manually worked, also by the popular craftsmen. My husband is even handier, and he also went to the arts school, where he learned the secrets of this trade. The bags, the wallets, the belts and the bracelets are personal designs, to which we only add metallic accessories. The models are unique, and they attract by its special design?, told us Ms. Virginia Ghiță.
Transylvanian Saxon belts
The Transylvanian Saxon are very popular. Generally, they are purchased by the Transylvanian Saxons groups, and also by the Saxons remaining in the country and by the ones who left abroad. The biggest order came from the Corona Group from Brasov. The two popular craftsmen also work for the Saxons in Germany, they being the only ones who are still making these kind of traditional products, which are part of the Saxon traditional costume. The models are inspired from the authentic traditional clothing.
Final product
?The leather we purchase is different, it has a variety of colours, we pay a lot of attention for it to be flawless and that it doesn?t require any more treatment. The model you see imprinted is manually made and it is called wrapping. We cut the model and apply multiple layers of leather until the image we want is finished. We attend crafts fairs with this manufacture, ethnographic museums and the Museum of the Romanian Villager. Our products are long lasting, of high quality and they have autochthonous personality?, told us Mr. Ioan Ghiță about the traditional leather manufacture and the work technique.
