Rural and Urban Crafts in the Heart of Brasov

The Association of Traditional and Contemporary Artisans is carrying out several projects for promoting the cultural patrimony in the rural communities from the metropolitan area of Brasov for touristic purposes but also to make known the craftsmen`s works to the public from the country and abroad. The Association is also promoting this patrimony by exhibiting Brasov artisans` products and traditional artwork at the fairs where art workshops and contests for young children are being organized.

Discovering Genuine Crafts

"Our purpose is to bring to light the greatest of our folk craftsmen among which we mention those specialized in: wooden sculpture, root sculpture, glass painting, wood painting, Transylvanian Saxon wood/furniture painting, folk art doll making, "frivolite" (shuttle embroidery), rope and corn husk braiding, figurative ceramic sculpture, leather working, vegetable braiding, crocheted toy making, egg painting, wind instrument making, folkwear sewing and embroidery and wool wet felting in a dedicated workshop." said Mr Cornel Sculean, Chairman of the Association of Traditional and Contemporary Artisans

Genuineness Recognition

The aim in promoting these crafts mentioned above is for the general public to be able to make the difference between kitsch and genuine art. This is the reason why the folk craftsmen are demonstrating their skills in on-the-spot workshops in front of the tourists for them to discover the way real pieces of art are made. Those interested are invited to take part in the workshops, which creates a bridge between the past crafts and today`s crafts and traditional art. We can practically say that a bridge is also being created between generations, between the urban dwellers and the traditions from the Brasov rural areas. Through these workshops, people have the opportunity to find out the craft materials used, the craft work procedures till obtaining the end product. How could one part a fake product from a real one if not by means of such live demosĂ

Making the Best of our Patrimony

The Association of Traditional and Contemporary Artisans` goal is to raise awareness among the general public with respect to the value of cultural diversity reflected in the Romanian traditional art, and to promote past cultural traditions through the development of today`s crafts. The cultural events that are taking place aim at drawing the audience`s interest in folk traditions and values, as well as making it aware of the contemporary character of past values.
