Homorod commune, Brasov County, administrates three localities: Homorod, first documented in 1250, Mercheasa - 1448 and Jimbor - 1432. The commune is located in the central side of Romania, in the South-Eastern side of the Transylvania plateau ?Homoroadele Hollow?, 4 km away from Rupea town.
Touristic objectives: the Fortified Evangelical Church from Homorod (12th century); in Mercheasa, the Evangelical Church and the Orthodox Church, the salty water well and the secular oaks, and in Jimbor village, the Jimbor citadel, the Evangelical Church, the Orthodox Church, and the Catholic Church.
The treasure beneath the hills
In Homorod commune are the Homoroade Hills which, administratively speaking, are located in the Central Development Region of Romania, on three counties: Brasov, Covasna and Harghita. In Homorod commune, these hills are considered to be a great treasure. They represent 40% of the administrative area. The hunting fauna in the forests of the commune consists of a diversity of animals such as bear, Carpathian deer, boar, wolf, fox, etc. The lesser spotted eagle lives here. Old forests provide nesting habitat for the birds of prey, black stork, and the oak woodpecker. The oldest oak also lives here, aging over 900 years old.
Oak?s day
?The protected areas in Mercheasa and Racos, Brasov County, deserve to be known and appreciated both by locals and also by the tourists visiting these areas. The City Hall and the Local Council carry out projects to this end. We had an event dedicated to the oldest oak discovered in Romania, aging 930 years old, whose purpose was to promote the ?Old Carpathian?. The event was organized in partnership with Carpaterra Association?, said Mr Marcel Pelei, Mayor of Homorod.
The oak, witness of the past
The locals claim that the old oak has witnessed the years passing by and it is the most appropriate to talk about the history of the place. On the ?Oak?s day? occasion, there were held a series of different activities aiming to present the culture of the area, a traditional products fair, organized by the City Hall of Homorod, a photographic exhibit of Remarkable Trees from Romania (organized by the artist Florin Ghenade), and the exhibit called ?A new geopark in Brasov County? including exponents from six protected areas within Brasov County.
