The Town Hall of Cristian, Brasov County, has organized a feast day of the Transylvanian Saxon traditions, Frühlingsfest in Neustadt, an Oktoberfest on a small-scale in a wonderful setting (the ballroom from Cristian) reminding of a Bavarian brewer. The coming of spring has been celebrated through colours, music and Romanian-Bavarian traditions unfolding while hearing German music from the Transylvanian Saxon brass band Tara Barsei. The official ballet of Oktoberbest offered three special choreographic moments, Die Frühlingsfest Band performed cheering German and Romanian music, the children from the sports dance club "La Passion" danced waltz, Junii of Cristian came with pieces of local folklore and Bavarian dances were performed by the folk ensemble "Mugurelul" of Rasnov. Dj Edelweiss entertained the audience throughout the entire feast.
Fruhlingsfest, a German Feast
The biggest German festival, Frühlingsfest, organized in Cristian attracted a lot of tourists who partied along with the locals in the German style, with Transylvanian Saxon music performed by Die Frühlingsfest Band, brass band music, traditional Transylvanian Saxon dances and culinary specialties: Turinger sausage, bratwurst, schnitzel, minced meat rolls, ham hock, pork ribs, home-made chocolate, ginger bread. Let`s not forget also about the ever present fresh and cold beer. Some came dressed in traditional Transylvanian Saxon/Bavarian/Austrian/German costumes.
Paying Respect to the Transylvanian Saxons
Mr. Serafim Dragos, Mayor of Cristian, said: "We wanted to bring Frühlingsfest in Cristian to show to the Transylvanian Saxons that we have not forgotten them. Before 1989 there lived a population of 2,700 Transylvanian Saxons and now there are 100 persons. During August 4th 5th we have organized the third event dedicated to them called "The Transylvanian Saxons Ball" to which 350 Transylvanian Saxons attended, as well as those settled in Germany. German orchestras and brass bands entertained the public. We have made a tradition the organization of this kind of feasts in order to promote tourism in Cristian and attract visitors to the main local attractions. Much of the Transylvanian Saxons did not sell their houses they had here and two families came back for good."
Romanian and Transylvanian-Saxon Customs
The Town Hall of Cristian has been organizing events to promote Romanian and Transylvanian-Saxon customs. The number of Transylvanian Saxons who remained is the largest in Cristian and the locals wish that those who left for Germany would visit them as often as possible.
Other local events include "Roainea" - the Will of Life, the Birch Trees Ball, the Classical Music Concert from the local Evangelical Church, "the Road of Bread" Festival, the Days of Cristian, the Maial (countryside festival) of the people of Cristian, as well as customs on the occasion of Christmas holidays, New Year`s Eve and Epiphany`s Day.
